Janet Clare Workshops

Janet Clare is an experienced quilting and sewing teacher from the UK who has published books as well as being a fabric designer for Moda. Her fabric ranges 'Hearty Good Wishes' (one and two), 'Field Guide', and 'The Wordsmith' reflect her aesthetic for beautifully hand drawn ideas. She regularly hosts talks and workshops focusing on her design process and her creative techniques. Her workshops are fun and friendly and her aim is for everyone to leave with new skills, beautiful work, and the confidence to create their very own textile artworks.

Hettie's Patch will be hosting two one day workshops with Janet Clare.

The first workshop will be held on Wednesday 28th of June, and is called 'Draw with your sewing machine'. It is a great introduction to free-motion stitching with your sewing machine. It is a favourite technique of Janet's and is an important part of her appliqué and quilting style. You will learn how free-motion stitching can transform and personalise you appliqué. She teaches through a series of fun group exercises in the morning, and then in the afternoon everyone is free to create their own appliqué blocks or pictures. She will help you design your own pictures and will teach you all of her tips and tricks to enable you confidently create your own thread sketches.

The second workshop will be held on Thursday 29th of June, and is called 'The Wordsmith - Quilted Memories to Cherish'. This workshop is about noticing and cherishing the simple things in life. It is about love letters, little notes, and finding pressed flowers in favourite books. It is about every day things recorded in a beautiful way. You will learn Janet's favourite techniques including fusible appliqué and free-motion quilting and you will create you very own unique project inspired by your favourite sayings and memories. She will be there to help you draw, design and create your own family heirloom. So gather up your letters and threads and be a wordsmith with Janet Clare.

Each daily workshop will start at 10am and finish at 4pm, and they will include lunch and morning and afternoon tea. The cost of each workshop is $220 for the day. If you would like to attend both days, the total fee is $400. A non-refundable deposit is required to secure your place in these workshops, and once paid, we will provide you with a requirements list. You can contact the shop on 08 8346 0548 to secure your place, or email us at hetties@bigpond.net.au.

These are fantastically creative workshops that will not only give you an insight into techniques and processes, but also enable you to pursue your own creative ideas with like minded people all in a fun and friendly environment. We look forward to creating with you!

'Quilt Lovely', by Jen Kingwell

We have a new book in store by Jen Kingwell. She will be coming to Hettie's Patch on the 18th and 19th of July to teach a weekend workshop. If you would like the opportunity to meet and learn from the person behind these beautiful quilts, please contact the shop, because we'd love to have you join us for the weekend. We don't yet have the project pinned down, (but the student list has already begun), and so I will update the blog with further information as it comes to hand.

Margaret Sampson-George's April workshop

We are holding a two day workshop from Saturday the 18th of April to Sunday the 19th of April (9:30am-3:30pm) with the lovely Margaret Sampson-George. The quilt is called 'Going Green Gradually', and the two day workshop is $220.

This quilt will begin as an experiment with 3/4" hexagons sewn into a lozenge shape. Four of these shapes will encase the centre circular block (as per the photo). In the two day class you will be concentrating on the centre, the lozenges, the corner blocks, and the colours and patterns within. A class taught by Margaret is an insight into not only colour, pattern, appliqué, and hand sewing, it is an insight into a love of quilt making.

We have a few places left in this class, so if you are a fan of her work, or if you just like the idea of starting something this fabulous, give us a call at Hettie's Patch and we can give you more information.

More from the Friday hand sewing class

These are blocks that began in Margaret Sampson-George's weekend workshop last year at Hettie's Patch. We were taught how to make our own paper hexagons and from that, create all the shapes that can lay within. We talked about choosing the fabric to suit the shape and the next fabric to suit the previous, and so on. Prue, from the Friday hand sewing class, now has this beautiful eclectic collection of quirky prints, bold spots, and contrasting stripes, all in different shapes but confined to hexagons. Margaret Sampson-George will be teaching again at Hettie's Patch on 18th & 19th of April (project details to come soon).
